Sadness is Not the Opposite of Happy, Contrary to Popular Belief

There is a dangerous trend that I see across social media. People are not feeling their feelings, not really. They have bought into the idea that happy is good and sad is bad.

There are two things wrong with this idea:

1) There is no such thing as a bad emotion or feeling.

2) Sadness isn’t the opposite of happy (and vice versa).

A feeling or emotion cannot be good or bad, you feel how you feel. The problem isn’t the feeling or emotion, it’s your judgment that causes the angst. Society has promoted the idea that a good life is the absence of anything that doesn’t feel good.

But the truth is growth often happens in the dark. The feelings that you experience in the shadow are necessary.

How many times have you seen a baby or a plant grow?

You know why you haven’t ever seen it with your own eyes?

Because growth happens in the dark. It happens while you are asleep (literally and often metaphorically). Evolution is merely a response to adversity. And…
